Recovery Peer Specialist

SUMMARY:

The Peer Support Specialist provides peer support services to clients with Substance abuse and co-occurring conditions. This individual will function as a role model to peers, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills, serve as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information and peer support for clients in outpatient and inpatient settings. The Peer Support Specialist will assist in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations and policies regarding social service provision, reporting requirements, data practices and client rights.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural differences and special needs of various marginalized groups, and ability to consult with other providers regarding these.
  • Knowledge of community resources including functions of other social service agencies.
  • Knowledge of vulnerable adult laws and similar rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of peer recovery philosophy and practice as it applies to those adults with mental health challenges.
  • Skill in consultation, problem solving and coordination of service delivery.
  • Skill in providing support to individuals and groups on short and long term bases.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective professional work relationships and therapeutic relationships with clients.
  • Ability to tolerate high levels of stress.
  • Ability to operate machines such as personal computers and other electronic devices.
  • Ability to transport clients in the community.

  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to a flex schedule which allows for evening and weekend hours as may be required to respond to individual needs.
  • Completion of required trainings, CEU’s and Certifications for Peer Recovery Support Specialist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide crisis response for recipient 24/7/365.
  • To provide immediate telephonic response to assess crisis and determine the risk, mental status, medical stability and appropriate response; provide face-to-face response as needed.
  • Will work with Treatment Team and other professionals to develop a Recovery Plan before discharge for recipients and/or make revisions to existing plan components as appropriate.
  • Complete all documentation/notes for each day/event service as provided.
  • Provide coordination of movement across levels of care, directly to the person and the family and coordinate discharge planning and community re-entry following hospitalization, residential services and other levels.
  • Monitor and manage the presenting addiction and/or co-occurring symptoms.
  • Provide linkage to appropriate services to include transportation if needed.
  • In a timely manner and as required, forward documentation to designated staff.
  • Help maintain the self-respect, personal dignity and physical safety of each recipient.
  • Work cooperatively with all other staff and relate favorably to recipient and families.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and consumer conferences or give advance notice to director Supervisor or Designee as to reasons for inability to attend.
  • Receive supervision by direct Supervisor or Designee.
  • Report any changes in consumer’s condition, family situation, or needs to the appropriate personnel.
  • Report any accident or incident to the direct Supervisor or Designee.
  • Report to direct Supervisor or Designee any suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of recipients.
  • Be familiar with PPBH policies and procedures including the securing of emergency services and the regulations concerning medication administration.
  • Be familiar with HIPAA regulations and abide by them.
  • Assure consumer’s rights are met and maintain consumer confidentiality at all times
  • Obtain and keep current all training required by the agency. Understand that failure to renew classes by their due date will result in being removed from the schedule.
  • Provide side-by-side support, coaching and encouragement to help clients socialize and carry out leisure-time activities on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Organize and lead individual and group social and recreational activities and provide other opportunities to practice social skills.
  • Perform any other duties as directed by Supervisor or Designee.
